Learn the eighth and final breath in the 8 Minutes to Inner Peace sequence: Ocean Breath.
Ocean Breath is the final breathing or pranayama technique in “8 Minutes To Inner Peace”.
Ocean Breath is often the first breathing pattern that students new to yoga learn in introductory classes.
I remember when I first learned Ocean Breath, also called Ujayii or Victorious Breath, I would practice everywhere – especially while walking or riding my bicycle.
I hadn’t quite gotten the hang of it and was making rather ridiculously loud noises when a fellow student in a yoga class corrected me.
When you do Ocean Breath completely, you’re going to feel calm and it’s very quiet inhale and quiet exhale and will calm your mind.
My most remarkable story about Ocean Breath is about weight loss.
I explained to a new yoga class that Ocean Breath increases our metabolism and qualifies as truly aerobic exercise because it brings oxygen to every cell in our body.
One of the students in that class took what I had to say to heart and started practicing Ocean Breath all day long every hour she was awake.
She only came to yoga class once a week and practiced no other formal exercise
She lost 22 pounds just by doing ocean breath! What if you could breathe away your weight? Wouldn’t that be a great way to calm your mind and feel better and look better?
The benefits of Ocean Breath are:
As you practice ocean breath, remember to make the sound of a gentle ocean in the back of your throat. As you inhale the tide coming in, as you exhale listen to the tide going out.
